U2 3D

A Documentary by

Bono's day job is not as an international diplomat and do-gooder. While he runs around like a former President of the United States much of the time, what he actually does for a living is sing oldies with his band U2. So we have a concert film with he and his three bandmates doing their thing in what's ostensibly Buenos Aires, Argentina (it's actually several venues in South America).

In other words, it's your average concert film, and as such, it's okay. It all depends on whether you like U2 or not, and as I was never all that much of a fan, I was less than floored.

But the advertising wasn't actually about the concert(s), it was about the über-nifty new 3-D process which makes you think you're actually there with the crowd, hi-def and all that. The only question is whether or not it makes your head hurt. Sadly, it does.

The problem is that the size of the screen and the crowd scenes are annoying. Yes, the people waving their hands in the air block the view sometimes, and thanks to the miracle of the new process they look like they're actually doing so, making you want to yell: “Down in FRONT assholes!” This is not something that will add to the enjoyment of the concert.

Also, there's a lot of digital trickery, using layering, dissolves and the like, and that's okay, at least it doesn't really distract from the music all that much. But still, with all the alleged innovation, this is still a concert film, and not the best of recent years. However, if you like U2, go ahead and see it.
