The Field of Flowers
by Mary Barnet
illustrations by Rich Schiff

To the field of flowers
Came the little brown rabbit
Grown strong thru the winter, and his Mother,
Now yearning for a salad of flowers
And the little roots from which they grow.
Bunny Rabbits

"The people in this house seem to stay home all day long," Shorty Rabbit told his Mother. For that was his name. Looking up from his meal, he saw Gwendolyn the Skunk dragging her long black and white tail across the neighboring field. Her flower garden had been mowed! Well, there was plenty for all and...Mmmm...Mmmmm...flowers sure taste good!Gwendolyn

Jimmy the Groundhog

First came Gwendolyn, followed soon after by Little Jimmy the groundhog. The great munchout began! Shorty Rabbit and his Mother stood back and watched. "They are eating flowers faster than the flowers can grow!" his Mother said.
"Why just last year" Jimmy the Groundhog boasted, "I ate every garden bud here in the People Family's Vegetable garden last year! And all by myself!", he added, wiping a bit of flower from his very brown chin. "I'm afraid I got carried away!", he said. "The Gourd buds were delicious! The People Family may be upset with me."

Mrs. Lady
Inside the little house, Mrs. Lady was joyfully watching all the little creatures dining on her lawn. "I can go to the market for my food, but these small creatures must eat what they can find. I am thrilled to see so many cute baby animals filling themselves up on my pretty flowers." She saw Shorty Rabbit look at her and she waved at him and smiled! Jimmy Groundhog saw the smile and knew she was not mad at him. He hiccuped and a flower petal flew from his mouth. He rolled over laughing and rubbed his belly. And they all lived Happily ever after.
