Our peaceful, non-partisan president may have fallen
prey to the shenanigans of the main stream media in that he had briefly
taken on the persona of someone who everyone loves to hate; the angry
Black man. With striking images and cleverly chosen lingo, the crafty
press corps has succeeded in influencing the compassions and concerns of
not only President Obama, but also the country’s. Indeed, the Gulf oil
spill is a tragic accident that will affect future generations, and the
countless wildlife that the planet will permanently lose is beyond
unfortunate. So anger, disbelief, confusion, and sadness are all
perfectly acceptable responses to this tragedy, but guilt and shame must
also be included.
Indeed, the deregulation of the oil industry during
the Bush / Cheney administration, which removed the need to enforce
vital safety checks and measures, has greatly contributed to this
catastrophe. The other , not so often mentioned contributor to this
record breaking disaster, is the consumer. Toothbrushes, toothpaste,
shaving cream, deodorant, shampoo, combs, hand lotion, panty hose, nail
polish, cold cream, perfume, lipstick, hair color, hair curlers, purses,
shoes, dresses, crayons, toys, dolls, cell phones, and video games are
all just a few of the products produced from the oil that is now spewing
throughout the Gulf waters. Our dependency on oil and the products
produced from oil is extremely high. So high in fact, that oil companies
are challenged to find creative ways in keeping up with the overwhelming
demand.
Even as I write this commentary, I realize that
without oil and oil products, stone tablets and chisels might be my
instruments to communicate this concern to world, or at least to the
people in my general vicinity. But it would be difficult to see the
tablet and the chisel without eyeglasses or contact lenses, and I may be
wearing something other than the traditional shirt and slacks, which are
all made from oil. Point being, that many of the products consumers rely
on every day, are derived from oil. If the extraction and transportation
process are not properly regulated, alternatives need to be found and
soon.
So, whose ass should be kicked? I hesitate to propose
that the president begin with a self-inflicted trashing for his use of
the products listed, which would also include his beloved Blackberry,
but instead, I would encourage a more vigorous search for alternatives
to oil, which is exactly what he is presently focused on. Clearly, the
call for President Obama to "get angry", and to "kick someone ass", is
just another lame attempt by the main stream media to force our great
leader into an irrational action. From inauguration, he has consistently
gathered data from experts, evaluated the various alternatives, and then
put into action a solution. But if the call for ass kicking’s are to be
handed out to those responsible for this disaster, as the media
suggests, then maybe we all should be on cue.
