TWO TICKETS TO HAVANA, PLEASE...

Today, any American citizen can hop on a plane and fly to 'rogue
nations' like Iran or North Korea, provided he or she gets a visa to
enter those countries. Even though they are part of what the Bush
administration called 'the Axis of Evil,' there is nothing (legally)
that this country can do to against you if you decide to do so. However,
the same does not ring true in case that same citizen decides to spend a
few days sipping mojitos at a Caribbean island just 90 miles off the
coast of Florida. If you do that, you are breaking the law, and might
suffer dire consequences if you go for it anyway.STORY

I guess I was a bit surprised that James Cameron's blockbuster Avatar
didn't win Best Film (the reason for having ten nominees was to make
sure big movies were included on the list), but if anyone was surprised
that he lost Best Director to Katherine Bigelow, I must say that I
really wasn't. After all, this was sort of a controversial awards
season, and the odds were not at all in Cameron's favor.First, there is
the fact that there was a woman nominated for that category. by Ernest Barteldes |

The
Power Of
Birds
(Last
Night!) There’s an interesting author’s note in the program for Robin Rice Lichtig’s The Power of Birds now at the Milagro Theater, and explains much about her fascinating and somewhat mysterious play. It’s an essay on bird migration; specifically, whether the migration is voluntary, crucial to the species survival or involuntary. by Arlene McKanic |

Gazette Exclusive ![]() Fat Chance by Melissa Beveridge While passing by a local fast food restaurant, I saw an overweight child, around 12 years old, bringing his tray to the table with his friend. Curious, I looked a little closer to see what this overweight 12 year old boy would be consuming, and surprise, it wasn’t a kids meal, hamburger, or even French fries. This boy had a big salad on his tray....Then, his next action smashed my hopes. -nycny.com |

There is a new phenomenon in the global arena called “Climate Refugees”. A climate refugee is a person displaced by climatically induced environmental disasters. Such disasters result from incremental and rapid ecological change, resulting in increased droughts, desertification, sea level rise, and the more frequent occurrence of extreme weather events such as hurricanes, cyclones, fires, mass flooding and tornadoes.
